‘This is by far the best maths training course I have been on
and I would strongly recommend it to others.’
(feedback from a teacher who attended in 2020/21)
Develop mathematical subject knowledge and understand the pedagogy that underpins the teaching of it.
What is involved?
This project is designed to improve the subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge for all practitioners teaching and supporting the learning of primary maths.
There Spatial Reasoning pathway consists of the equivalent of four days, spread out over a minimum of two terms. Professional learning and practice development continue throughout, with participants implementing new ideas into their daily practice.
Who can take part?
All primary teachers are welcome to apply and would benefit from taking part in this Spatial Reasoning pathway. Current research shows that making space for developing spatial reasoning improves maths! In this programme we explore how the underutilised route of developing spatial thinking supports children’s success in the subject.
This programme is particularly relevant for:
– Teachers who participated in ECT Phase 2 with Matrix Herts in 2023/24.
– Teachers who have previously participated in the Primary Number Programme (2019/2020/2021/2022/23) where we looked at how pupils develop Number Sense and the progression of skills in additive and multiplicative relationships, as well as through the understanding of fractions.
– Teachers who’s schools are in the Embedding or Sustaining phases of Teaching for Mastery.
Benefits
- Your pupils will positively engage with maths that challenges them
- Your pupils will be able to explain their maths and their mathematical thinking using appropriate language
- You will identify pedagogical approaches that will enhance teaching and learning, and know how to plan for these
- You will enhance your maths subject knowledge with an emphasis on the key concepts in each mathematical area covered
What is the cost?
The SKTM Primary Teachers Programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so is free to participating schools.
