Work Group Outline
It has long been recognised that maths teaching is enhanced when teachers are confident about the subject matter. This project is designed to support primary teachers in developing specialist knowledge for teaching mathematics.
What is involved?
The programme is based on four core primary modules and will explore the key elements for each, including precise language, structures and representations:
- Number sense
- Additive reasoning
- Multiplicative reasoning
An additional module offers an introduction which sets the scene for the current maths teaching landscape.
Who can apply?
This programme is designed for teachers who would like to further develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths. It will be particularly relevant for NQTs/RQTs, teachers that have moved phases or teachers that have not received maths-specific training.
Participants and their schools must be able to commit to the full academic year’s programme.
What is the cost?
The SKTM – Primary programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
Who will be leading the group?
Sally Barker – Sally is a Primary Maths Teaching for Mastery Specialist, NCETM PD Accredited lead and Assistant Primary TfM Lead at Matrix Maths Hub. She has 10 years experience as a classroom teacher and subject leader. Sally has been involved in the Teaching for Mastery programme since its inception in 2014 and has visited Shanghai on two occasions, to observe lessons taught using this approach.
