Work Group outline
This is a Research and Innovation work group seeking to identify issues surrounding the transition between Key Stages 4 and 5 in Maths.
It is well known that many students struggle to come to terms with the demands of ‘A’-level Maths, particularly early in the course. What are the reasons for this?
- Is pedagogy at Key Stage 4 a contributory factor?
- Or at Key Stage 5?
- Are core algebraic and other skills lacking?
- Is the level of independence and commitment too great compared to GCSE?
- Are there particular groups of students who do not opt to study Maths at ‘A’-level, despite having excelled at GCSE?
The purpose of the work group is to discuss, explore and attempt to resolve these and many other questions.
As a starting-point, if you have five minutes to spare (and haven’t already done it), please click HERE to complete an introductory questionnaire, which will help provide the starting-point for our investigation.
Who can take part
The work group will be highly suitable for teachers who have experience of teaching Mathematics in both Key Stage 4 and Key Stage 5.
What is involved
The work group will meet 4 or 5 times throughout the Spring and Summer Terms. The first of these meetings will be online, and planned as a short (1 hour) introduction to the project.
Subsequent meetings will alternate between face-to-face and online format, though this may be adapted according to the needs of the group.
What the desired impact will be
Improved understanding of the issues surrounding KS4-5 transition, which should support better student outcomes in the longer term.
Smoother transition between the key stages, leading to a better overall experience for students.
Enable and encourage all the students for whom it is appropriate, to study Maths and Further Maths at ‘A’-level, including those from groups that are currently under-represented.
What is the cost?
The project is fully funded by the Maths Hub programme and is free to all participating schools/colleges. Cake will be provided at face-to-face meetings.
