Collaborative Work Group for Secondary Maths Departments
NB: Only schools that have embarked on the Teaching for Mastery journey are eligible for this Work Group
Being part of this Work Group will provide opportunities for secondary maths teachers to collaborate and deepen their understanding of what Teaching for Mastery looks like in practice. Participants will work together to refine their approaches to reasoning, fluency and representation, building coherence across the department to improve outcomes for all pupils.
Aim of the Work Group
Teachers will explore what mastery means at Key Stages 3 and 4, how to plan and structure lessons to promote deep understanding, and how to develop a collaborative departmental culture that supports ongoing professional learning.
Sessions will include opportunities to observe and discuss practice, share approaches, and reflect on how teaching for mastery can positively influence curriculum design and student progress.
The content of the programme will be adapted according to the needs of the group.
Who can join?
Each participating school should ideally nominate two teachers from the maths department, at least one of which is able to influence classroom practice and lead collaborative development within the department. Participants should have experience teaching across KS3 and/or KS4 and ideally one should be a Mastery Specialist or Advocate, but this is not a requirement.
