SKTM – Early Years Teachers
/in Early Years/by matrixmathshubDevelop mathematical subject knowledge and understand the pedagogy that underpins the teaching of it.
“A very experienced teacher from my Early Years staff returned from session 1 of the SKTM Number Pathway buzzing with ideas. She says it has opened doors to a whole new way of looking at maths in Early Years, it is so much more than just counting!’
Math Lead referring to SKTM (Specialist Knowledge for the Teaching of Maths) for Early Years.
What is involved?
This programme is designed to improve the subject knowledge and pedagogical knowledge for all practitioners teaching and supporting the learning of early maths (developing Specialist Knowledge in the Teaching of Maths – SKTM).
For 2024-25 there will be two types of SKTM Early Years pathways (participants are welcome to book onto both pathways):
Pathway One: Number
Pathway Two: Pattern
Each pathway consists of the equivalent of four days, spread out over a minimum of two terms. Professional learning and practice development continue throughout, with participants implementing new ideas into their daily practice. Participants will have the opportunity to plan and prepare within the Work Group sessions.
Who can take part?
This project is for Early Years teachers and practitioners who would like to develop their specialist knowledge for teaching maths. It may be particularly relevant for those that have moved phases or have not received maths-specific training.
Benefits
- Your pupils will demonstrate a positive attitude towards maths, being willing to have go, persevere, and share their mathematical ideas.
- You will explore and increase your use of a range of pedagogic approaches that will support pupils in engaging with and developing their maths.
- You will understand how maths opportunities can be developed across all areas throughout continuous provision and in everyday routines.
What is the cost?
The programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so is free to participating schools.

Mastering Number at EY and KS1
/in Early Years/by matrixmathshubSupporting pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 to develop good number sense
A national programme to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense
What is involved in the Mastering Number Programme?
This programme focuses on the key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception & KS1 classes. Participating schools will receive training through National and Local sessions to support each set of half termly materials, and a wealth of pupil-facing resources.
There is an expectation that schools will provide a short daily teaching session for all children of 10 to 15 minutes. In Reception this will be the main input for number content of the EY curriculum, while in KS1 this is in addition to their main maths lesson, which may be reduced by 10-15 minutes to support logistics in schools’ busy timetables. Lead Teachers in schools will also take part in an online community to share practice and engage in critical reflection.
Who can take part?
Lead participants from Work Group schools will be three teachers; one each from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 – known as Lead Teachers. Some support will also be given to subject leaders and headteachers. Where appropriate, Lead Teachers are expected to support the other teachers in their year group teams.
Benefits
- Your pupils will be able to clearly communicate their mathematical ideas.
- You will develop a secure understanding of how to build firm mathematical foundations.
- You will work to develop teaching strategies focused on developing fluency in calculation and number sense for all children.
- You will develop understanding and use of appropriate manipulatives to support your teaching of mathematical structures.
What is the cost?
The programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so is free to participating schools. This includes a free class set of Rekenreks.

Primary Teaching for Mastery Readiness Work Group
/in Early Years/by matrixmathshubA programme for primary schools that want to adopt teaching for mastery in maths, but would benefit from a staged approach
Be part of the continuing programme to develop teaching for mastery in maths in primary schools
“I would never have believed at the start of the year that (Year 4 child) who previously struggled a lot in maths would now be achieving the same as all her peers in class!”
Charlotte T. Yr 4 teacher, Embedding phase in Teaching for Mastery.
What is involved?
Schools with additional challenges need bespoke support to ensure their systems and cultures are conducive to a teaching for mastery approach. Those who are not yet ready to join a Teaching for Mastery Development Work Group will prepare for implementing a teaching for mastery approach which is embedded and sustained across the whole school. This will involve receiving support from Mastery Readiness Leads, and developing classroom culture and attitudes to maths that will support a teaching for mastery approach, both on the part of teachers and their pupils.
After the year-long programme, Mastery Readiness schools will be ready to progress into Development Work Groups and beyond.
Who can take part?
Schools will have an identifiable barrier to being able to successfully implement teaching for mastery at present. For example:
- Leaders at the school want to focus upon establishing the firm foundations for their sustained mastery journey first
- The school has been identified, by the Local Authority, as being suitable for the programme
- There has previously been high turnover of staff, meaning that the implementation of sustained change has been difficult but there is now a more stable situation where progress can be made
- Improvement in progress and attainment data for maths is a priority across the school
- The school serves an area of low social mobility
- It has been identified that there is a need for additional support for leadership of maths
Benefits
- Your pupils will demonstrate an improved mathematical mindset and potential to progress in the subject.
- Your school leaders will promote a collaborative learning culture amongst staff in order to make improvements to the teaching and learning of maths.
- You will put into practice the school’s shared vision for what maths will look like in your school.
- You will try new approaches to teaching maths and reflect on the impact of your changes regularly, so that you can share good practice beyond your own classroom.
What is the cost?
The programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so is free to participating schools.
