Develop mathematical subject knowledge and understand the pedagogy that underpins the teaching of it.
What is involved?
Two maths-specific subject knowledge projects are available to support primary Early Career Teachers (ECTs) – one is for ECTs who have not yet participated in this project and one is for those who participated in 2023/24. Both projects offer high-quality subject knowledge and pedagogy maths support for ECTs, recognising the requirements of the ECF.
This programme strikes a balance between developing teachers’ maths subject knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge, alongside classroom practice to support the learning of maths. Participants will attend the equivalent of up to four days of sessions, focusing between sessions on the use of tasks in the classroom. Participants will have the opportunity to plan and prepare within the Work Group sessions.
Who can take part?
This project is for those identified as Early Career Teachers – teachers in their first or second year of teaching.
Benefits
- Your pupils will be seen to elaborate when responding to questions, showing that their answer stems from a secure understanding.
- You will evaluate and adapt existing resources to enable them to be used to meet the needs of pupils
- You will develop an understanding of approaches to assess pupils’ prior learning, so that learning sequences are planned to take this into account.
What is the cost?
The SKTM Primary Early Career Teachers Programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so is free to participating schools.
Have a look at this feature to learn more about the resources available to Early Career Teachers on the NCETM website.

Years 5-8 Continuity Work Group
/in Post 16, Primary/by matrixmathshubYears 5-8 Continuity Work Group
Strengthen the transition from primary to secondary school
What is involved?
Work Groups focus on curriculum and pedagogical knowledge across the KS2-3 transition from Years 5 to 8. Through genuine cross phase collaboration, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how the maths in the primary curriculum develops in KS3, and how key concepts are developed and represented at KS2.
A lesson study approach is encouraged, where all participants focus on a particular aspect of the maths curriculum and work collaboratively to develop this in their schools. Cross-phase classroom observation and discussion of practice are encouraged wherever possible. Participants will have the opportunity to plan and prepare within the Work Group sessions.
Who can take part?
This project is for both primary and secondary schools. It may be particularly suitable for linked ‘families’ of schools: primary, secondary, etc. A ‘family’ could be a secondary school and their associated (feeder) primary schools or groups of schools from within a MAT. Lead participants should be teachers of Years 5-8, ideally with some responsibility for curriculum development.
Benefits
- Your pupils in KS2 and KS3 will demonstrate a positive attitude to maths.
- You will make common use of approaches, representations and language across phases.
- You will deepen your knowledge and understanding of the curriculum across KS2 and KS3 and the expectations of pupils at the end of each Key Stage.
- You and your cross-phase colleagues will collaborate on issues of curriculum and pedagogy as a normal part of your schools’ transition practice.
What is the cost?
The Work Groups are fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so are free to participating schools.

Mastering Number at KS2 (2025-26)
/in Primary/by matrixmathshubMastering Number at KS2 (2025-26)
Mastering Number at KS2 Work Group focusing on multiplicative thinking.
In 2025/26, Maths Hubs will be offering schools the opportunity to engage in Mastering Number at KS2 Work Groups.
Knowledge of multiplication and division, and its applications, forms the single most important aspect of the KS2 curriculum and is the gateway to success at secondary school. It is also a key area that pupils often struggle with. Automaticity with multiplication tables relieves cognitive load and develops pupils’ confidence to achieve success.
The project offers schools that are involved in Mastering Number at Reception and KS1, and any other Teaching for Mastery Work Group, the opportunity for teachers to develop the knowledge and skills to secure good multiplicative number sense and automaticity in times tables. The programme will focus on Years 4 and 5.
If you would like to join this Work Group in 2025/26, please complete the registration form below by 5.30pm on Monday 30th June 2025:
Mastering Number at EY and KS1
/in Early Years, Primary/by matrixmathshubMastering Number at Reception and KS1
Supporting pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 to develop good number sense
A national programme to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense
What is involved in the Mastering Number Programme?
This programme focuses on the key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception & KS1 classes. Participating schools will receive training through National and Local sessions to support each set of half termly materials, and a wealth of pupil-facing resources.
There is an expectation that schools will provide a short daily teaching session for all children of 10 to 15 minutes. In Reception this will be the main input for number content of the EY curriculum, while in KS1 this is in addition to their main maths lesson, which may be reduced by 10-15 minutes to support logistics in schools’ busy timetables. Lead Teachers in schools will also take part in an online community to share practice and engage in critical reflection.
Who can take part?
Lead participants from Work Group schools will be three teachers; one each from Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 – known as Lead Teachers. Some support will also be given to subject leaders and headteachers. Where appropriate, Lead Teachers are expected to support the other teachers in their year group teams.
Benefits
- Your pupils will be able to clearly communicate their mathematical ideas.
- You will develop a secure understanding of how to build firm mathematical foundations.
- You will work to develop teaching strategies focused on developing fluency in calculation and number sense for all children.
- You will develop understanding and use of appropriate manipulatives to support your teaching of mathematical structures.
What is the cost?
The programme is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme, so is free to participating schools.
